We are all familiar with singing competitions on television and also on YouTube nowadays. And without a doubt, the most exciting part of these competition performances has to be when the singer hits the high note or notes of the song!
“Listening to others sing high notes also makes us feel happier and excited, and that creates good feelings in us, and makes us want to hear it more, or to even attempt those high notes ourselves!”
So why do we have this obsession with high notes? What makes us want to listen to singers sing high?
There are a few reasons IMO. Firstly, we all like to watch people do things that are out of the ordinary. And since high notes are not what most ‘regular’ people would be able to sing well, so we want to see singers sing these high notes, and we cheer along with them when we hear something great and exciting!
We also get excited because we can hear the emotion and the commitment that the singers put into that high note. Just the hours of practice is sufficient for us to have feelings of admiration for the singer! And of course, the higher and tougher that note, the more our admiration for the performer onstage. We want to give them our support, because we know how hard they must have worked to be able to sing that high note well. And we can see them work their ass off to be able to sing the highest part of their song well, and we applaud their sweat and their tears!
Also, most high notes would be in the range of pitch and frequency that the human ear is very receptive to picking up. And this makes them very attractive to us when they are sung. Sometimes, when a singer sings a song, and the high note isn’t exactly very high, it doesn’t trigger us to be attracted to it that much, because certain frequencies haven’t been achieved! But that being said, if a singer is able to sing well in slightly lower notes, and still achieve a good effect, then that makes it even more admirable!
Listening to others sing high notes also makes us feel happier and excited, and that creates good feelings in us, and makes us want to hear it more, or to even attempt those high notes ourselves! And when we are able to achieve it in our singing, we have somehow established a connection with the original singer of the song, and feel like we have built a relationship with him / her. This is also why a lot of singers and singing students are quite unwilling to lower the key for the song, and always insist on singing the original key, so that they can feel what the singer felt when singing the song!
However, we should always be very mindful when singing high notes, not to push with excessive breath force, and also to always keep our false vocal folds retracted in order to avoid constriction or vocal abuse.
